The biennale will take place across Malta and Gozo, mainly within Heritage Malta’s historic sites, many of which have been declared by UNESCO as being World Heritage Sites, including Valletta, the capital, and Gozo’s Ġgantija.
Through contemporary art, maltabiennale.art will be investigating the Mediterranean, reflected in the theme for the biennale’s first edition: Baħar Abjad Imsaġar taż-Żebbuġ (White Sea Olive Groves) maltabiennale.art 2024 will open its doors on March 11, and will welcome visitors until the end of May.
‘OTHER GEOGRAPHIES, OTHER STORIES’
The OmenaArt Foundation introduces its thematic pavilion, scheduled for Fort St Elmo and titled “Other Geographies, Other Stories” based on the curatorial concept by Hanna Wróblewska and curated by Natalia Bradbury. Within this unique space, artists utilize the mediums of sculpture, photography, video, and installation, weaving a common thread of activism through their work. Originating from Poland and Ukraine, these artists reside and create in various European locations, including Spain and the UK, and engage in international residencies. Their artistic exploration delves into themes of migration, transformation, and the repercussions of turbulent change. Despite diverse generational and artistic backgrounds, these artists find a convergence of experiences within a shared narrative.
‘SPACE & TIME’
“Space and Time” is an ephemeral exhibition curated by Boris Kudlička at Villa Luginsland, rebranded as LuginsLand of Art. It unveils the symbiotic relationship between artistic innovation, architectural heritage, and historical narrative. Serving as a collateral event during the inaugural edition of maltabiennale.art 2024, this curated showcase offers a nuanced exploration of contemporary artistic practices within the context of a meticulously preserved Neo-Renaissance villa. The exhibition showcases the works of renowned Maltese and Polish artists and encompasses both site specific installations which have been created in line with the curatorial concept and the historic reference of the site, as well as a curated selection of works from pre-existing series by the artists.
